Integrity
If you are starting your business began by building a code of ethics and allow for it to evolve as you build your business. Look for input on that list because it should expand and become more applicable to the different portions of your company. More than likely there will always be companies that make more money and have bigger buildings. There will be companies that have better marketing and will be more popular than yours. No matter where you fall on this spectrum you must be honest and true to yourself. The true virtue of any business owner is based on not what he will do with the public witnessing, but instead how he will act when no one is looking. The only people that will know are him and his maker. During that single moment a business is made or destroyed. If the ethics began to fall during that moment, then there will be greater compromises that will gradually involve more people and greater deceit. It spreads through a company like wildfire and will do so for a long time. It will become very hard for that organization ever to alter what has been changed. These transgressions will be often justified to meet an ends.
At first their might be regret, but eventually that guilt will vanish. The degree of iniquities will grow so large and deep within a company that there will be no more direction or honorable goals. Morals are altered to fit greed. Eventually this company will collapse. Start now to set a tone in your business that will be honest and a lifestyle that will be founded with integrity. Even if no one will see, you are still forming a habit. It will eventually show to your employees and kill their trust in you. Always act as if your full company was always watching you. Now this doesn’t mean you should be stiff, but enjoy be virtuous and let others know that it is expected and will only create more growth and freedom as a company. This will be the same for any aspect of life. If you have trust issues in your house then it will be hard for you to treat your business family any different. One of the best ways to create integrity is to find teachings of great philosophers and religious leaders. Read their teachings and apply it to your life so that you will find your weaknesses and areas where you are strong in virtue. Relish your honesty even if it might cost you some dollars, because in the end it will be the difference between a long lasting business and a flash in the pan business. In the end you will always have to give your business up, but the only thing you have left is your integrity and the impact you left on others in your business.
