A Trip To Leavenworth
Well we looked at the map to see what was there and my mom mentioned Leavenworth. That didn’t mean much to me, but she told me there was a military base and well known prison there. Well I thought that was cool. I was thinking this must be like Alcatraz! I was a 10 year old at this time and I got all excited about it.
So we took a pit stop to Leavenworth and traveled to the jail location. Well fortunately we had a camera to keep the memories for later dates. So my mom suggested that we get out and take some pictures. I remember looking up at the guards on the large prison and thinking how cool it is that we are taking pictures of this jail like we are CIA agents or something. I remember doing this stupid little move of taking sneaky pictures like I was playing with them. My mom laughed and thought it was great. Then as I walked back to the car three guys pulled up in a military police vehicle and guns in hand.
I thought well this is it. We are going to be interrogated and probably killed right here in Kansas. Not cool. So I got into the car thinking that my mom could protect me from those large rifles. One of the MPs came up to the car and told my mom that we couldn’t take pictures because this facility was heavly guarded with some very bad criminals that didn’t even know that they were in Leavenworth. Well my mom played dumb and told them the story about 50 states while I sat there thinking, “Please don’t pee your pants in front of them or they might shoot you.”
Well they let us go with our pictures and fortunately I didn’t know any life time convicted felons in Leavenworth, so we were clear. It definitely was a memorable experiene in Kansas that my mother and I didn’t expect.
