Visions Of Excitement

I remember talking to a man that owned a construction company in my hometown.  He was giddy as a schoolgirl on her first date….all the time.  He seemed to me like a successful man with his family, business, and his faith.  Well every aspect of his life.  He always seemed to be going relentlessly.  I remember talking to one of his sons one day and they had mentioned how they thought that their father was crazy.  He was in his fifties and kept working harder than any employee.  Most of the men were at least twenty years younger.  His sons would often say to their father, “Dad!  Slow down!  If you don’t kill yourself, then you will at least kill us!”  They became so irritated that they had to walk away (partly because they were as tired as fat kids in a marathon).  This man was fine every night with four hours of sleep.  A machine.  He was so inspirational to many people.

I thought I should try to pick his brain and see if I could drink from this fountain of youth.  I asked how he kept that type of energy one day at a church event.  He smiled at me.  He pulled me aside into a room.  I thought I was going to have to choose between a blue pill or a red pill.  He sat me down across from him at a table.

He said, “Cade…”

I leaned forward.

“Cade…”

I responded with a “Yes?”

“Cade…”

Now my back was hurting.  “What? (You crazy man)”

“I love what I do.  I wake up every day so excited how I will help people out and I am so excited to see my sons and my lovely wife.  I am happy to drive my old beat up Ford.  I love walking out to the site and putting on that hard hat.  I love blueprints.  I can’t wait to pound thousands of nails or pour concrete.  I get giddy to see the results of my actions and to see the satisfaction in my projects.  I then can’t wait to get done with work and come home and kiss my wife.  Then it gets better!  I go to church events, teach classes, read scriptures with my family every Sunday evening…”

By now I was getting tired and bored.  I had a blank stare.  He could tell he was losing me.  Nothing worth while to me.

”Cade…I don’t know if you would understand, but I promise you some day…you will.  You will just see it and it will all make sense.  Some day you will dream it and that fog will be lifted.  You will see visions that will shake your being.  I call them…visions of excitement

He got up and gave me a pat on the shoulder.  He walked out and left me there.  I was expecting something profound, but it didn’t come.  That was it!  What a sham!  That guy has got to be doing crack!

Years later. that man passed away and I went to his funeral.  I found out that he died with a smile on his face spending his last moments with his family.  He finished building a home a week before his death.  Working hard as always.  Many people attended his funeral and everyone talked about how he treated them with such respect and enthusiasm.

His wife spoke at his funeral.  She mentioned how happy her husband was and how he was filled with consistent joy and excitement.  She began to discuss with people something no one had ever known.  Her husband had suffered from Cancer for over twenty years.  He got it in his forties.  Many times he was told that his time was limited and he would be gone within months, but somehow he fought and fought and as she put it, “enjoyed life too much to let it take him.”  He ended up dying of natural causes.

We face so many different cancers in our lives, our business, and with our loved ones at times.  They can be seen and unseen, but nevertheless they are there.  At the same time I believe we have one of the greatest gifts in this world and that is control of a physical body with agency to act how we desire.  I believe that we can will our bodies and minds to perform great feats and find miracles.  When we connect with our souls and understand that power of joy and excitement, then there is little to get in the way as far as obstacles go.

Not a single person there believed death got the best of this man.  I think that is truly the case for some people that go because they will allow it.  We are the only ones that allow ourselves to fail.  The cancer is our excuses and blame we place on nature and people.  Think of how many times it is another person’s fault and we are not willing to offer mercy or understanding.  Since that conversation I have thought about it often.  I believe what this great man was explaining to me was, there are simple things are magnificent beyond any adversity in life that makes each day worth living. Enjoy those moments in your daily routine and become excited about your goals and tasks.  When we do this then we can achieve monumental milestones.

There are times now recently in my life when I find myself satisfied with little sleep (note: doesn’t mean lack of sleep translates to being a great person) and more importantly excited to face each day.  I still struggle immensely and find negativity around every corner of my mind, but then I dream of how great my life is now.  I dream of what I will make it like this man made his.  In the end I choose to have fears and doubts or as he put it…visions of excitement.

Wow, Mr Cade, this is a great post. The lesson to all of us is we should be seeking a career that gives us those visions of excitement. If we’re not in that career now, we can’t rest until we are. I’m feeling inspired now. Reminds me of something a great philosopher said…I believe his name was Leslie von Sliger…

Thanks Mark for your comments. I have heard of this Les Sliger that you speak of. I believe he was into dooley-doo sauce and Nascar Jackets if I am not mistaken.
