Starting A Journal
I watched Patton the other day on TV. George C. Scott is great in his performance of the World War II General. Some of my favorite parts of the movie are when Patton recalled historic battles that were fought on the same ground he was fighting on in Europe. He would use the strategies of these men (Caesar, Alexander, and Napoleon) he studied to apply in his same battles. These lessons he had learned guided him in his victory in the Atlantic theatre.
The same can be said for you in your life. If you don’t learn from history then you will become a history lesson of failure instead of finding life altering moments. Now that sounds harsh, but think of Judas, Benedict Arnold, Richard Nixon, and countless others that are tarnished in the minds of many. It is amazing how we can see the failure from a distance, but then we are placed in similar situations (maybe more subtle) we face the temptations of our own carnal desires such as pride, lust, greed, etc.
It will take time and plenty of lessons for us to learn before we make it right. We need to make sure we don’t have to continue to learn the same lessons. There are certain moments in life that involve the security and trust of your family and loved ones when you should not fail. Prepare yourself so that you will act wisely when those moments arrive.
How many times have we heard of a heroic story of a police officer, fireman, or a civilian that has performed a great act of kindness that seems astounding, but they respond by saying, “that is what I was trained to do.” Success is a series of events that we prepare for years, we envision these moments in our minds, before the acknowledgement from others. Be prepared for that moment now so you can obtain your greatness.
This seems way off track, but this is where a journal comes in handy. Learn from your daily failures and achievements. Look back at each day and ask yourself, “Why did that happen?” Be willing to read back on what happened a month ago. It can be astounding to see what you have accomplished. Pat yourself on the back and keep doing what is right. Sometimes people fail not because they don’t do it right, it is because they don’t keep doing it right.

I enjoyed seeing your comment on my “Polynesian Culture Center” blog. It was an amazing day! We planned to go to the temple the next day, but that was our last day, and had to be back to my cousin’s early. We visited the beaches on the north shore instead. We plan to go back to Hawaii within the next three years, and we are going to make an effort to go to the temple the visit. We are going to see BYU Hawaii also. That’s were my cousin’s wife works.
I was in the temple in 1976. They had just restored it and had an open house.
I was reading your blog on Patten. I am very interested in wars. Possibly because I was a baby during the Pearl Harbor disaster.
I love blogging. It’s a great way to keep a journal!
