How Much Do You Appreciate Your Life?

I was talking to a friend, while I was sitting in my nice home in Alabama, that was in a third world country and he mentioned to me that he was devastated by what he saw. He had mentioned how impossible it was for these people to take baths or drink water without doing so in water soiled with animal remains. He mentioned how many of these people didn’t even know what a toothbrush was. They struggled to live day to day lives without going through sickness and many suffered from deadly diseases that shorten their lifespans. It was astounding to hear from my friend how simple these lives were and yet how satisfied these people were despite all of their pain and health issues. They didn’t have doctors, media outlets, electricity, comfortable housing, and many other luxuries that we take for granted.

I attended a religious meeting recently where people were mentioning that many others become addicted to money and it leads them down the wrong path. They looked at people that were more wealthy than them as people that had lost their way. Not all of them, but many of them. It was easy to excuse money as a sign of weakness. They mentioned how people are over taken by money fall to the carnal desires of the world.

What is funny is that in all reality these same people that were speaking and considered themselves “not rich” relative to others in their country, were really very wealthy financially when compared to this tribe. They were Rockefellers to them. I found it funny because the same thing they were preaching about, they didn’t have any idea they were facing challenges with.

Now understand that money is an issue with me like anyone else, but I think we should set some guidelines. Wealth is always relative and it comes in many ways other than in green paper. Also many people have luxuries that millions would crave for, but yet somehow they are not satisfied and want more. They are not willing to share those luxuries with others willingly. These people are all over the world and they are not making only six and seven figure incomes. Everyone has this issue.

1) Don’t excuse yourself and your responsibility to help others just because your situation is apparently poor in your mind. It is anything but. You always have something to offer even if it is sweat and time, which to some people is really priceless. We all have more responsibility then what we can even imagine. Our capabilities to assist are really endless.

2) Start to take a look at your situation and realize how rich you really are and then compound it. There is nothing wrong with becoming wealthier. There is plenty to go around. Look at it as an opportunity to free your time and offer those funds and your time to help others, starting with your family. I like to think of the analogy of being on a plane. When there is a loss of oxygen and the masks flop down, who is it that you apply the mask to first? It is you. Give yourself a chance to breathe financially, spiritually, and time wise first. Then you can move toward helping others.

3) Don’t get down if the chips don’t fall your way. There are plenty of ways for you to create success. Just because you don’t have money or the lifestyle that you want, doesn’t mean that you can say it is wrong and most people screw it up anyways. Because most people screw up middle class and lower class too. Just realize that you can only control your own situation and take advantage of the opportunities to grow and create independence in your life, so in turn you can help others create that for themselves.

Hi Cade,

Thanks for the thought provoking post.

I especially like the last part where you mentioned not to feel disheartened when the chips are down.

Yes too often people get down, but they are actually just a step away from success. People quit too early!

We must change this attitude if we wanna go far. If we look around, successful people like Steve Jobs had to go through some trials and tribulations before tasting some achievements.

Thanks for this!

Cheers,
Jag

Americans have absolutely no clue how lucky they have it. Especially the children! Every kid should be sent to a poor country to live for a few weeks. When they come back to the US the really appreciate how good they have it! Americans don’t realize that with an American Passport they can go pretty much anywhere in the world. Most people living in Third World Countries can leave the country easily. For a Brizilian to get a visa to visit the US it will take an act of congress! Be we can easily get a Brizilian visa with ease!

I went to India a few years ago and found out that as Americans most of us have no idea just how blessed we are to have been born in the U. S. After visiting a country like India, you take less things for granted. I loved the Indian people that I met. As poor as they were, they had beautiful spirits.
