Just Do It! Act On Your Business Opportunity

“You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.”

Henry Ford, Creater of Ford Automobile

One of the greatest mysteries about the human mind is the fear to act. I know that this has killed me time and time again with past make money business opportunities. I remember reading Hamlet and wondering to myself as a teenager, “Why the crap doesn’t that dumb@$$ just go ahead and kill his uncle for killing his dad? I mean come on Hamlet! He stole your mom!”

Well I have come to understand our buddy Hamlet more as I have gotten older. There is this stupid mechanism that says, “I am getting older so I need to make less mistakes than I did before and even more importantly I have to be right in front of other people to prove this to them and myself.”

Wow…we are dumb at times, aren’t we? I think that this is one of the greatest diseases in the human race. We call these sins of omission. We are just as guilty and sometimes even more guilty by the actions that we do not take. We have just become so numb to it that we justify this apathy.

Deep inside we know we need to make changes to improve our business, life or whatever problem is tickling our under bellies. We just don’t confront them because we are so stuck on fear of failure.

One of the best examples is that we gain so much knowledge, but never experience true wisdom. So much of business is planning and meetings, but little of it is acting. We want to learn everything before we act, but put off action for ages. Now don’t get me wrong, preparation is good, but we can learn as we go with many tasks.

How many times have you seen the stupid guy become rich? We become jealous and say, “Well if he can do it then I can!” Then we pout a little and go back to eating ice cream watching Age Of Love, Lost, 24 or whatever (I wasn’t paid to plug those shows).

These “stupid people” have something that many people lack and that is drive to act. They just go out and do it even if it means falling on their faces and looking stupid. What is funny is that they are learning and getting smarter while you are watching and getting dumber. Interesting, huh?

So just go out and do. You will never fully be until you do. Find out what is the top three biggest goals you need to get done and write them down on a list. When your day is done make sure they are crossed off and then do another three tomorrow and so forth. Your days will have more purpose and you will finally get to where you want to be.

A lecturer told me recently that in his department at a large consulting firm they go through heaps of ideas, trialing them quickly to find out which ones work and which ones don’t. Instead of spending 2 months writing a comprehensive business plan on the idea they see what is the simplest thing they can do to prove their idea works, and go do that in about 2 weeks. Great advice. Actually DO it instead of just talking and preparing too much.

Actually, with all due respect to Henry Ford, you certainly can build a reputation with what you’re going to do. Unfortunately, too many people already have that rep.

It’s good I read this post today. Yesterday was a wavering do-it-don’t-do-it kind of day and you helped put things in perspective. Time to go kill Hamlet’s uncle :)

As someone who is both starting a new business (checking employment references) and continuing an arts career (pro songwriter)…being urged to JUMP rather than edge ever closer to the edge of the diving board…is just what I needed this morning.

I can just imagine Edison, “Hm, let’s try iron, cream cheese, my lab assistant’s hair, a prune, a glass eye”…

It’s said the greatest fear we all have is not the fear of public speaking, but the fear of losing face.

Anybody wanna join me in risking looking foolish? Not much actually physical pain or monetary loss in >looking

Fear of failure is something I’m trying to overcome, so this article was appropriate for me. I keep putting things off until “just the right time”. In truth, I have no idea what qualifies as the right time, so maybe it’s time to act. Now.
