Sarah Knows How To Build A Small Business

Sarah was a friend of mine in college.  She always seemed to be facing so many trials in her life.  She struggled in college, didn’t fit in with the environment, got fired from jobs left and right.  She had little focus.  Sarah just didn’t know what her purpose was yet in her life and she truly felt lost after her father was killed in war.

She saw a couple friends outside of their place packing boxes into a bus on morning.  She thought it was kind of weird and walked outside to check it out.  One of her friends asked her to help out and she decided to carry a couple of boxes.  Sarah could see through the top of some of these boxes and she saw toothbrushes.  She asked one of her friends what the toothbrushes were for.  Her friend responded by saying they were for people in Africa.  There was a tribe in Kenya that they were giving these toothbrushes to.

Her friend pulled out a wooden stick and handed it to Sarah.  Sarah asked her what this was for.  Her friend responded that this flat wooden stick was what this tribe was using to brush their teeth and they were sharing it with others and contracting diseases.  They had horrible dental care and were getting terrible diseases because of this lack of propriety.  This shocked Sarah and she asked her friends how they got involved.  They told her it was a non-profit organization and that they were going to Africa in a day.

Sarah was deeply impressed by this and wanted to go with.  She of course couldn’t but later signed up with this organization, got a passport, and took several trips to Africa and was impacted immensely by how little things that were so significant that she had was taken for granted.  She met many people that had lost close family members like she had.  Sarah related to these people so well that she eventually decided to start her own non-profit organization.

She petitioned to countless potential investors and she was able to get a small backing at first to ship health products to Africa and deliver them.  Eventually she was able to get other people involved, including doctors and dentists.  Sarah turned this non-profit organization into a legitimate force.  She had found purpose in life and true value in this business.  It was easy for her to see that there were people just like her all over the world that were struggling in many different ways and that by coping and working together, there was possibility for hope.

What a great example of “when the student is ready, the teacher will come”. And, tough as some of those years might have been for Sarah, there’s no doubt in my mind they gave her invaluable insight to help her in what she’s doing now.

Quite off topic: Maybe your RSS symbol should be bigger. It’s obvious, now that I found it, but it took a few visits to find it. Just a suggestion :)

Very inspiring indeed. I forwarded this to my sister, she’s in a similar situation now as Sarah (was)

Nice story. You can feel lost for some periods in your life, but one day, you get an “ah-ja” moment. Something in front of your eyes tells you the right direction you have to take. From that day, you live devoted to a passion.
