Understanding Your Employees
-Michael Gerber, Author of E-Myth
I think there are some important things to remember with the employees. Every owner wants their employees to do exactly what they ask them to do and then don’t want to worry about any headaches of actually dealing with their employees. Kind of silly, but it is possible. First of all you are going to have to stop being a manager and start thinking like a true owner and Entrepreneur.
You need to stop micro managing your employees and hire other people to do it. Stick to the big picture and what systems you can put in place to help your employees feel empowered and truly a necessity to the day-to-day operations. Respect their decisions and see if what they are doing and offering is better than what you believe because their thoughts down in the trenches can add meaningful value to everything that you do.
Make sure to be the ideal employee of your company. Your responsibility is different from their responsibilities, but you are still a beacon to these other employees with everything you do. If you exude cheating, stealing, greed, sloth, anger, and any other negative emotion then they will perform the same thing with their actions. If you extend kindness, honesty, consistency, fortitude, courage, and other positive qualities then guess what your employees will do. No matter how much an employee makes fun of ownership, it doesn’t change the fact that they look to you for answers and will respect you, even if they don’t like you.
Be honest to yourself and the intentions of your business. At times that will mean parting company with employees and others that you care about as friends. I have seen this time and time again. Just because you can go to a movie with them, doesn’t mean that they are the ones that need to manage one of your departments. Find people that are capable and willing to do what it takes to create an ideal environment even if it means hiring the unpopular guy.
In the end always pay attention to your employees and their opinions. Ask them for advice and be willing to sacrifice your pride for the success of the company.
