How To Start A Small Business Opportunity

What did the Germans not plan for?

What did the Germans not plan for?

Toward the end of World War II, Germany made one last surprise push against he allied forces known as the Battle of the Bulge. There attack initially had great success because of the secrecy of the attack, their knowledge of the land, and power of their Panzer tanks.

They ran into one problem, they ran out of gas. Eventually they had to give up because of bad preparation and it led to the eventual surrender to the allied forces. It started so strong, but the lack of preparation for potential hazards led to eventual defeat

This happens often in the war of business. So many great ideas exist out there where fresh entrepreneurs have great ideas that go out like a shooting star. They never anticipate potential hurdles with a small business opportunity.

Don’t Run Out of Gas With Your Business

There are many innovative business ideas out there for you to grab on to. When starting your own business and it can be easy to get going without having a thorough plan. Realize that if you don’t have a thorough business plan with contingencies you can fall to unexpected attacks and personal weaknesses. You must first put in time to establish a lot of research and figure out exactly what is needed.

Most people want to start a small business since they know what they are excited about getting into. The next step is building your business plan that enables you to establish your industry structure, competitive grounds, long term direction, and your knowledge of capital requirements.

Deciding A Brand

One of the most significant things you will decide is the name for your brand that you are starting probably from scratch. This can be so crucial to you and how people remember you, but a lot of the building has to do with your ability to market well to prospects and returning customers to fulfill their needs. No matter how arbitrary your name is, it comes down to thorough attention given to customers day in and day out.

Next it is necessary that you register your business which is going to require you to fill out several things for legal and name purposes. Some of these include an LLC through your local city officials, potential a patent for a product and probably a trademark for your brand through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. You should check with your Secretary of State Small Business Office and they will direct you from there.

Financial Support

It can be a challenge to find the financial backing necessary, but you need to start getting used to the habit of asking for money even if you haven’t done it before. Many owners for small business start-ups want to be funded by grants or venture capitalists, but that is not always easy. You must obtain the investment money on your own through personal savings, loans from banks, generous angel investors, SBA grants, or other creative ways that people may not think of.

I always recommend starting from home if you can. This will save you so much time as far as leasing costs, utilities, and other rental fees you may have to owe. If you can save that money and add it to another area of your business initially that will be one less headache to worry about. Also don’t feel bad about starting from home because I recently saw a statistic that said around 80% of the fastest growing companies in the US get their roots from a home office. The only thing you should be concerned about is how motivated and focused can you be working from home so your time is used efficiently.

Make A Budget

One of the areas where most business owners struggle is that they don’t realize the costs they would have to face with their business and struggle to keep a budget. You should have a project budget with realistic financial goals for revenues and expenditures. Create an accounting system that will be a road map for you and realize that account and bookkeeping can’t be avoided with small business opportunities so consider hiring someone on to do it for you.

Get your accounts in order from the beginning, this will save you time and money later instead of struggling to answer questions from the IRS or other government branches that could question your operations. If you are not detailed then again consider outsourcing help so you don’t have to worry about all this hassle. Preparation will help you keep moving forward with your business and prevent you from running out of “gas”.

This is as much your blog as it is mine and now the blog is yours.

Great walk through as to what one should do when starting a business. Your link to the Battle of the Bulge was spot on; entrepreneurs need to plan and prepare for every option if they really want to succeed.

Tanner,

Thanks so much for that. I really want your input, what is the single most important question you would have about a small business opportunity that you feel is not answered? Or are there areas talked about that you would want more information? If so what?

Great article.

If you would like a tool to manage your small business activities and Projects, you can use this web aplication:

http://www.Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage and prioritize your Goals (for business but also in other areas of your life), Projects and Tasks. It has a Checklists section, for the routines and repetitive activities that any business has to do. Also, it features a Schedules section and a Calendar, for scheduling you time and activities.

Some features from GTD are also present, like Contexts and Next Actions.

And it’s available on the mobile phone too, so you can access it from anywhere.

I’m currently in the process of trademarking the name of my small business. I read on several trademark resource pages that this is usually the best thing to do for protecting a business name. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

before you start anything, always always plan first! With a blog or website this means finding the keywords first!

I find that importing and exporting is a great opportunity if you’re starting off in business. Small businesses can now have presence all around the world. You can buy very cheap stuff in your country and sell it for a big profit in another place in the world. In my case, business in Mexico is rewarding. I export and import products all the time.
